So it's been a bit of an "Ultraman" weekend here. Red and I watched a few episodes of "Ultraman" and "Ultraman Max", and remarkably she hasn't thwacked me for doing the "Police Squad" theme whenever Hayata takes the Corvair out for a spin(out).

I cooked breakfast this morning and while we were feasting I came up with the following ditty, done of course to the dubbed opening theme of the original series:

Ultraman is on the can
Leave a message at the tone
Ultraman, if he can,
Will call you back when he is done..."

That was regrettably as far as I got due to the resounding thwack I received.

The Redhead is on an Ultraman binge. She bought volume 1 of the original series on DVD, and she just got a set of the "Ultraman Max" series, which ran last year. Part of the attraction for the latter was that the actors who originally portrayed Hayata, Fuji and Ito show up in Max, albeit in different roles.

I have a fondness for the big guy, myself. I wrote a Tenchi story called "A Piece of Tail" which featured a retired Hayata and Ito having a slightly too-close encounter with Ryoko. But that of course wasn't enough; I also wrote an Evangelion story called "Old School", where Ultraman shows the kids the proper way of kicking angelic tail. The response to the latter story stunned me. There are a lot of Ultraman fans in anime fandom, and they really loved that tale. Made my month, let me tell you.

But this...this was a rush for real.

The newest series, "Ultraman Mebius" (should be "Mobius", but picky picky picky) has a movie coming out called "Ultraman Mebius and the Ultraman Brothers". Among those "brothers" is none other than the original Ultraman himself, along with his human counterpart Hayata. A clip of the trailer is below, and any fan of the original is going to get an incredible rush when he/she sees one particular scene in it. Get your beta capsules ready and enjoy.
